New York Minute

Here is a little ditty about New York City. I wrote this on March 29, 2019 while sitting in our hotel overlooking the city and the bustle below. We were in New York exploring for a few days prior to embarking for a cruise vacation; something that seems light years away these days. While in NYC, I was trying to take it all in. Every. Single. Bit of it. Every noise, every smell, every face, everything. It is a magical place. So here it is, brought to life from the confines of a journal:

The city has a pulse; a vibration of life and an untapped love waiting to engulf those whose feet touch the ground. Every corner of the city is blanketed by a buzzing to those attune enough to hear it. The sounds multiply, layer, and embody everything. The sounds are a palpable buzz of sirens rushing past, of endless chatter, and of horns bellowing as if being provoked by an ego of impatience behind the wheel. There is a tangible hum that erupts from the earth below. Looking down from the window, there is a sea of faces passing each other, rarely stopping to see the other – to truly see the other. Instead, their eyes peer into small reflective screens that seem to suck their attention, void of all emotion other than what is devoted to that screen. They are so busy rushing to the next destination, collectively vibrating with so much energy, and such self-imposed purpose. As I watched the busy below, I wondered what would happen if a “cosmic pause button” could be pressed, forcing a universal slowing; a decreased pace allowing everyone to walk slower and with intent to finally experience the buzz that surrounds them. Then the true power of the city would be revealed.

Today, as I wrote this entry from the pages of that journal dated March 29, 2019, it was not lost on me that the “cosmic pause button” I wrote about then, came a year later in the form of a global pandemic, severely impacting the very city this was written about. I dedicate this to the amazing city of New York that will one day again be buzzing with energy. May the next “pause button” be of your own choosing allowing you to enjoy your city, continue to lift each other, and be an example of love and diversity.
